Are you looking for a break from the everyday hustle and bustle of L.A. life – or just a change of scenery? If so, Big Bear might just the place for you! Nestled in between Los Angeles and San Bernardino National Forest, this quaint mountain town offers a respite from traffic-filled days, complete with fresh air and peaceful trails. With its incredible variety of activities that cater to different tastes, it’s no wonder why more people are heading to Big Bear each year – including business owners looking to “work from home” from a cute, cozy cabin! I personally don’t ski or snowboard, but it’s just as easy to enjoy Big Bear if you’re not a slopes enthusiast. Here’s my list of my top 6 must-stops to visit in Big Bear that can’t be missed!
Breakfast: Grizzly Manor Cafe
The first stop on your list should be the Grizzly Manor Cafe, which is right in the heart of Big Bear. This quaint cafe is a cozy spot that has all the breakfast classics you need to fuel your action-packed day in Big Bear. We ordered two plates to split (without knowing ahead of time how MASSIVE the servings were!) My husband ordered the Rudy’s Scramble – three eggs, ortega chilis, mushrooms, served with hash browns and toast. I ordered a short stack of buttermilk pancakes – and this stack was short but WIDE! These were the biggest, fluffiest pancakes I’ve ever had. The staff was welcoming, friendly, and real – which – coming from LA, I very much appreciate.
Coffee: Moonridge Coffee
We’ve been going to Moonridge Coffee for years – and it never disappoints. It is located in the heart of Moonridge, which is a neighborhood located southeast of Big Bear Lake – and is home to Bear Mountain Ski resort. On your way up to the mountain, you should stop by Moonridge Coffee for a cozy, consistent spot for all your favorite hot beverages. With its comfy atmosphere, cozy seating, and cabin-style décor (including a super-cute loft!) you won’t look much further to try their unique, local take on coffee.
Day Activity: Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk
Once you’ve grabbed your coffee, Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk is a great day activity for those looking to get brisk walks in the fresh air. Most folks will make time to visit the lake, but this is a gem hidden right on the southeast side of Big Bear Lake. Visitors can enjoy the scenic trail and tranquil scenery as they walk around the marsh and take in the sun’s warm rays. This leisurely stroll provides a great opportunity to see some of the lake’s wildlife up-close and to snap some photos. Parking is right off of Big Bear Blvd and Stanfield Cutoff – and having walked this boardwalk for a few years now, it’s fun to see how the surrounding nature has changed!
Dinner: Hacienda Grill
When the parking lot is packed on a weekday in Big Bear (notoriously a much slower time than weekends) then you know you’ve stumbled across a great spot! The Hacienda Grill offers incredible dishes such as molcajete (my favorite!) and a flurry of margaritas to satisfy even the most discerning palates. Prepared with so many different meats, veggies, bacon-wrapped shrimp, (and nopal!) their molcajete was an experience like no other. Plus – any mexican spot that serves 2+ salsas with their chips is already a 10 in my book. I’d highly recommend!
Evening Activity: Yosemite Axe Throwing
Axe throwing is a unique and fun activity to do as a couple, especially if you and your partner like a bit of competition (like we do). Yosemite Axe Throwing in Big Bear is the perfect place for an after-dinner activity. It’s like bowling, darts, and miniature golf rolled into one exciting night out – sprinkled with a little element of danger (yes, there’s a waiver). Don’t worry, they’ll walk you through the rules and how to throw the axe – which is pretty simple to get the hang of. We’ve gone every time that we come back to Big Bear because it’s fun, the vibes are great, and the staff is super-friendly and welcoming.
Dessert: North Pole Fudge and Ice Cream Company
Looking for a nostalgic dessert spot? Look no further – the North Pole Fudge and Ice Cream Company is sure to satisfy your dessert cravings! They have something for everyone, whether it’s creamy decadent fudge, indulgent ice cream, or classic caramel apples. We come back every year for their amazing fudge flavors, and we come home with at least 3-4 new ones to try. It feels very fun and childlike in their shop – like you’re 5 again picking out candy with your parents that caved and let you grab whatever you wanted. This spot provides a dessert paradise that can’t be missed!
Big Bear offers tons of things to do and places to visit. We love coming back year after year because of how easy it is to pack a duffle – sans any need for makeup since most of the activities are outdoor and the vibes around town are casual. We head up the mountain for a quick 2-2.5 hour drive from LA. From the cozy atmosphere of Moonridge Coffee to the excitement of the axe throwing spot, there’s something here for everyone. Don’t forget about taking a stroll on the boardwalk. Whether you’re just looking to explore or get out of town for a few days, Big Bear is the perfect place for an adventure. So pack up your bags and head out to Big Bear – these 6 must stops won’t disappoint!
