Are you looking for a perfect weekend escape during the summer? Look no further than Palm Springs, a beautiful desert oasis in Southern California. (But be ready for the heat!)
With its stunning landscapes, luxurious resorts, and a variety of activities, Palm Springs has something for everyone. I’ve been vacationing here once a year for (almost) my entire life, and the past five years we’ve made it a tradition to visit during my birthday weekend in early July. Since it is one of the hotter months of the year (starting in the low 100s) – it’s pretty quiet, and prices – well you can’t pass these up! The Coachella valley is built for the heat so air conditioning and sidewalk misters will make it worth it…I promise.
Here’s a sample itinerary of things we usually do that we are *always* recommending to friends to make the most of their weekend in this sunny paradise:
Day 1: Arrival and Relaxation
- Check-in around 3 pm: Start your weekend right by checking into your chosen accommodation. We typically grab an AirBnB so the dogs can stay with us (don’t worry, they stay in the air conditioning!) Whether it’s a luxurious resort, charming boutique hotel, or quaint home rental, Palm Springs has plenty of options to suit your style. Just remember that they are pretty strict on the parties and sound ordinances so if that’s the goal of your trip, research heavily ahead of time.

-
Enjoy the Pool:
Beat the heat and unwind by the pool. Lounge under the palm trees, soak up the sun, and take a refreshing dip in the pool to kick off your weekend in style. No pool access? Check out the local hotels – many offer day passes. -
Dinner at Counter Reformation:
In the evening, head to Counter Reformation for a cozy and sophisticated wine bar experience. The bar is small (seats 15-20) and offers a delightful selection of wines paired with mouthwatering tapas-style dishes. When we go in the summer it is never packed, but we’ve heard how busy it can get in the high season, so make a reservation. They have a great menu with perfect pairings. -
Dessert at Great Shakes:
Since dinner was light tapas, take a delightful detour to Great Shakes, a local favorite ice cream shop. They have milkshakes and handmade ice creams in a variety of unique flavors – but it’s the cute donut floater on all their drinks that makes it a picture-perfect dessert. My favorite? The root beer float. My husband has tried 4-5 different shake flavor and has loved each of them.
-
Rancho Mirage Library Telescope:
After dinner, consider a visit to the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory, where you can stargaze with their telescope during the summer months. It was closed when we went this past trip – but I’ve heard amazing things. It’s a unique and free activity to enjoy the beautiful night sky. Desert skywatching is unmatched. Can’t make it? No worries – I promise you’ll see stars anyways. Less light polution here than in L.A.
Day 2: Golfing, Brunch, and Evening Fun
- Golfing or Massage: Get up early for a round of golf at one of the scenic golf courses around Palm Springs. The trick is getting started early since the heat really sets in around 9am. Alternatively, if you prefer a more relaxing start to your day, treat yourself to a rejuvenating massage at a local spa. We love Omni Rancho Las Palmas (it’s a family tradition) but many of the hotels also feature a spa option.

-
Brunch at Sherman’s:
After your morning activity, head to Sherman’s Deli & Bakery for a delicious brunch. Known for its generous portions and classic deli fare, it’s the perfect spot to refuel. I’m a lox + bagel kinda gal, so we always grab that and a plate of their *huge* potato pancakes to share! -
Pool Snacks:
Pre-order a delightful selection of cheeses from On the Mark to enjoy poolside snacks. Savor the flavors while you continue to bask in the warm desert sun. -
Dinner at The Tropicale:
In the evening, get ready for a vibrant and tropical dining experience at The Tropicale. With its lively atmosphere and tasty cocktails, it’s an excellent spot to enjoy a delightful dinner. The food is mostly Asian/Latin fusion – but they always have something tasty on the menu. Plus the classic Palm Springs pink vibes are immaculate.
-
Casino Fun at Agua Caliente:
For some evening excitement, head to any one of the three (!) Agua Caliente Casino locations and try your luck at the tables or slot machines. The casino offers a range of entertainment options to keep you entertained. I personally am a fan of the slots – but they’ve got tons of options, cool bar scene, and great music (if you’re lucky, live music at that!)
Day 3: Farewell Breakfast and Departure
- Breakfast at Cafe La Jefa: Start your final day with a visit to Cafe La Jefa for a delicious breakfast. This charming cafe serves up tasty coffee from a cute to-go window and delectable breakfast options to get you energized for the day. The decor is adorable and if you go early enough you can take a stroll along the main drag downtown prior to departure.

-
Hadley’s for Date Shakes:
Before you exit the Coachella Valley, make a quick stop at Hadley’s for their famous date shakes. Seriously, just do it. These creamy, date-infused treats are the perfect way to end your weekend getaway. Dates are abound in this entire Valley and people order them from all over the world. I order the date-banana, but some prefer the just date shake. Up to you!
Honorable Mentions:
- If you have extra time or are visiting on a Thursday, take advantage of the free admission to Palm Springs Art Museum to explore captivating artworks and rotating exhibits in the front hall.

-
If you’re looking for another breakfast option, Elmer’s Restaurant is a fantastic choice. With its friendly atmosphere and a wide array of breakfast favorites, it’s a great place to enjoy a hearty meal before your departure.
-
Shop ’til you drop at El Paseo, known as the Rodeo Drive of the desert, where you’ll find upscale boutiques and art galleries.
-
For those looking to shop local, consider visiting Mojave Flea Trading Post Market Market. They feature local artisans and business owners and I could personally stroll these all day.
