This is the start of a three-part series about my recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. I’ll be dishing about the amazing art + architecture, the vibrant people and artisans, and of course, the mouthwatering FOOD (the main reason I went)!
Part 1: Art + Architecture
Welcome to Oaxaca, a city that has captured the hearts of travelers worldwide. Named the best city in the world to travel to by Travel + Leisure readers, Oaxaca is certainly a treasure trove of art, architecture, and culture that is sure to leave a lasting impression, and leave you wanting more.
My journey began at the Marriott Hotels City Centro, a modern oasis in the heart of the city. Our group was camped here (over 10 of us!) and this spot allowed us to explore the streets of Jalatlaco, Oaxaca’s unofficial street art capital. It is surrounded by vibrant murals and graffiti that showcase the creativity and talent of local artists.
Next, we visited the Templo de Santo Domingo, a stunning example of Spanish Baroque architecture. Built in 1608, this church is adorned with intricate carvings, ornate altars, and a breathtaking gilded interior that leaves visitors in awe of its beauty. If you’re an old building buff like me, then this is a must-stop.
Continuing to explore, I encountered more of Oaxaca’s bustling streets and talented artisans. From colorful textiles to intricate pottery, the city’s markets are a treasure trove of traditional crafts that reflect the region’s rich cultural heritage.

One of the local spots close to the hotel (we asked where the folks working at the hotel liked to eat) was Tortas Lalita, a local eatery that offers a delicious selection of traditional Oaxacan tortas. Many of these restaurants are housed within the owners’ homes, providing a unique and intimate dining experience. This was the main seating area in the establishment!
Another highlight of my journey was the Templo de San Matías Jalatlaco, a beautiful example of Oaxaca’s religious architecture. Its ornate façade and stunning interior make it a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.

Each day was spent walking a bit around the Centro, and explore more of Jalatlaco’s charming streets and colonial architecture, I was so struck by the neighborhood’s old-world charm and vibrant energy. The vintage cars, bustling activity, and colorful buildings create a scene that is quintessentially Oaxacan.

Oaxaca is a city that truly has it all – from stunning architecture to vibrant street art, rich history, and delicious cuisine. Whether you’re a history buff, an art enthusiast, or a foodie, Oaxaca offers something for everyone. We hope this visual journey has inspired you to explore this beautiful city and experience its unique culture firsthand.
